KEETCH MEETS COUNCIL, GROWERS AND OBJECTORS IN POLYTUNNELS ROW

9.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 26th Jul 2004

Hereford's MP Paul Keetch has continued his involvement in the on going debate about polytunnels locally. Over the weekend he visited a number of farms open to the public where polytunnels are used and spoke to some local people objecting to them. Tomorrow (Tuesday) he will visit a commercial farm near Ross where polytunnels are used and will meet with local council officials and councillors to discuss a suggested local voluntary code of practice.

"Whilst I fully understand the use of polytunnels in extending the growing season for soft fruit, I do not want to see them as a year round feature of the Herefordshire countryside", said Mr Keetch.

"I have been in touch with Government Ministers and tomorrow will meet local councillors and officials to try to see who can control these structures. It seems unlikely to me that a voluntary code of practice will work, but we should perhaps try that as a start. However in the long run we need central Government to give local authorities the powers to control their use, as with other planning issues.

"Polytunnels have their place in Herefordshire but they must be controlled."
