KEETCH QUESTIONS PRESCOTT ON HEREFORDSHIRE COUNCIL TAX RISE
12.00.00pm GMT Mon 1st Mar 2004
Hereford's MP Paul Keetch has tabled Parliamentary Questions to Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott about Herefordshire Council's proposed Council Tax rise. Last week the Leader of the Council met Local Government Minister Nick Raynsford to discuss the rise.
"People in Herefordshire will be very suspicious of this rise," Mr Keetch said. "The first thing the Tories and their "Independent" allies did last year when they took control of the council was to increase the number of their own councillors on the Cabinet from 7 to 10, each of them receiving £10,000 of our money.
"Also, given that the Council has effectively privatised Housing and Road Maintenance, one wonders why they need more Government money and more paid councillors to deliver fewer services."
Mr Keetch's question to the Deputy Prime Minister on the discussions he has had with the council should be answered on Thursday, the day before the Council is due to set its Budget.
